Tree Removal Mollongghip
Mollongghip is a small rural locality of about 100 people in the hills north-east of Ballarat. One detail matters more than anything else for tree work here: Mollongghip is split between two councils. Part of it is in the Hepburn Shire and part is in the Moorabool Shire, and the two have different rules about removing trees. Knowing which side of the line your property is on is the first step.
This page from Tree Removal Ballarat explains how to check, and what each council’s rules mean for tree work.

Which council’s rules apply?
Check your rates notice, or look up your address on VicPlan. It shows both the council and the overlays on your land.
| If your property is in… | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Moorabool Shire | Moorabool’s guidance is that most trees and vegetation need a planning permit to be removed, destroyed or lopped, and native trees usually also need an offset. See our Ballan page for how that works in practice. |
| Hepburn Shire | Native vegetation rules apply, and some overlays in the shire carry tree controls. See our Daylesford page for how Hepburn’s controls work. |
Either way, the state’s native vegetation rules apply. Native vegetation includes grasses and groundcover as well as trees.
Clearing around the house
On a rural block, the most useful tree work is usually bushfire preparation near the house and driveway. If your home qualifies under the 10/30 or 10/50 bushfire rules, vegetation close to it can usually be cleared without a permit, whichever council you’re in. See land clearing.
CFA’s standard conditions also call for 4 m of clear height over driveways. See canopy lifting.
Common questions
How do I know which council my Mollongghip property is in?
Your rates notice will say. You can also enter your address on VicPlan, which shows the council and the planning overlays.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree?
Probably, if the tree is native or you’re on the Moorabool side. Check with the right council before booking.
What should I send for a quote?
Photos of the tree, a rough height, what’s nearby (the house, sheds, power lines), access, and which council your property is in, if you know.
