Tree Removal Newlyn
Newlyn sits on the Midland Highway where it meets the Ballarat–Daylesford Road, 8 km west of Creswick and a short way west of the Wombat State Forest. Newlyn Reservoir, built for the Clunes water trust and fed by Birchs Creek, lies in the forest foothills. The town is in the Hepburn Shire.
This page is from Tree Removal Ballarat. It covers what living on the Wombat’s edge and near the reservoir means for tree work on a Newlyn property, and how Hepburn’s rules apply.

Next door to the Wombat
The Wombat State Forest was one of the hardest hit areas in the storm of 9 and 10 June 2021, when the forest was strewn with fallen trees. Clean-up of storm-thrown timber went on for years.
Newlyn properties on the forest side can face similar exposure. Two things are worth knowing:
- Your trees. Large trees near the house, sheds or driveway are most likely to fail when strong wind follows heavy rain. If one starts leaning or lifting the soil after a wet spell, have it checked before the next storm. See our arborist page.
- Forest trees. Trees in the state forest are public land. If one threatens your property, contact Forest Fire Management Victoria rather than cutting it yourself.
Fire season on the forest edge
Living beside a large forest also means fire risk over summer. If your home qualifies under the 10/30 or 10/50 bushfire rules, clearing close to it may not need a permit. See land clearing.
CFA’s standard conditions call for at least 2 m under branches near the house and 4 m of clear height over driveways. See canopy lifting.

Around the reservoir
Newlyn Reservoir was built as a water supply, and the reservoir land is public. After World War I, soldier-settlement farms were cut from the Sutton Park estate near the reservoir, so some private blocks sit close to it.
If your property adjoins the reservoir land or the creek, don’t clear or dump green waste over the boundary. Check VicPlan for any overlays on your land before clearing near the water.
- check VicPlan for overlays on your address, including bushfire and environmental overlays
- ask Hepburn Shire’s planning team before removing native trees beyond the bushfire exemption distances
- know where your boundary with the forest or reservoir land is
- remember Newlyn North is a separate locality 2 km away, so use the right address on any permit
Hepburn Shire’s rules
Native vegetation rules apply throughout the shire, and some heritage overlays in the shire carry tree controls. Our Creswick page covers how Hepburn’s rules work in town.
Common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Newlyn?
If it’s native, probably, unless it’s within the bushfire exemption distances of an existing home. Check with Hepburn Shire first.
A forest tree is hanging over my fence. Who do I call?
Forest Fire Management Victoria, which manages state forest. Don’t cut it yourself. Storm-damaged forest trees can fall without warning.
Can I clear near the reservoir boundary?
Not onto the reservoir land itself. On your own side, check VicPlan for overlays first, since land near water supplies can carry extra controls.
What should I send for a quote?
Photos of the tree, a rough height, what’s nearby (the house, sheds, fences, power lines), and whether your property adjoins the forest or reservoir land.
