Tree Removal Wallace VIC

Tree Removal Wallace

Wallace began as a Cobb and Co stop between Melbourne and Ballarat, and grew as a farming and dairy district on fertile volcanic soil. Unlike Gordon to the east, it sits outside the old gold mining districts. The west branch of the Moorabool River runs through the area, and Wallace is in the Moorabool Shire.

This page is from Tree Removal Ballarat. It covers what Moorabool’s permit rules, the river and Wallace’s farming country mean for tree work on a local property.

Moorabool Shire’s permit rules

Moorabool’s guidance is that most trees and vegetation need a planning permit to be removed, destroyed or lopped, and native trees usually also need an offset. That applies in Wallace as much as in Ballan or Bacchus Marsh. Outside the bushfire exemption distances around a home, assume a permit is needed and check first.

Our Ballan page covers how Moorabool’s rules work in practice, including a case where even non-native trees needed a permit.

Farm windbreaks and old plantings

Wallace was settled by small farmers and has a long dairy history, so older properties can have windbreaks and homestead plantings close to houses, sheds and dairies.

Introduced trees aren’t covered by native vegetation rules, but Moorabool’s broader permit guidance and any overlays still apply. Check VicPlan before removing a large windbreak.

Along the Moorabool River

If your property runs down to the west branch of the Moorabool River, leave vegetation on the banks alone. Native riverbank vegetation is protected, and works on a waterway can need extra approval as well as a council permit. Report fallen trees or blockages in the river to Moorabool Shire.

Before tree work in Wallace:

  • check VicPlan for overlays on your address
  • contact Moorabool Shire’s planning team before removing trees beyond the house zone
  • leave riverbank vegetation alone
  • for clearing around an existing home, check whether the 10/30 or 10/50 bushfire exemptions apply. See land clearing.

Nearby areas

Gordon, just east, is also in Moorabool Shire but sits on old gold ground, which changes what to check before digging.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Wallace?

Quite possibly. Moorabool Shire says most trees and vegetation need a planning permit. Check with council before booking.

Are old mine shafts a concern in Wallace?

Wallace sits outside the former gold mining districts, so it’s far less of a concern than in Gordon or Mount Egerton. Still mention any soft ground before digging.

Can you remove an old cypress windbreak near our sheds?

Usually, once any permit requirements are sorted. Send photos showing how close it is to the buildings and the access for equipment.

What should I send for a quote?

Photos of the trees, rough heights, what’s nearby (the house, sheds, fences, power lines), access, and whether the property adjoins the river.
